“God, this is absurd,” she said to herself, pacing her tiny, book-filled apartment. She had always found joy in old books. Now, she felt a strange disquiet. The letter was a simple confession of a betrayal, a secret affair.

Her mind was a whirlwind of suspicion, doubt, and anger. She felt as though the world was closing in, the walls of the apartment closing in on her. She felt sick, her stomach twisting.

She stared at the letter, then threw it across the room. She could never, ever be comfortable again, and the feeling was all-consuming. She needed to escape. She needed to disappear.
